Applications for the Builders Lab Are Open Now
PRESS RELEASE
Oakland, CA - June 25, 2024
Today Terner Labs announced the launch of the Builders Lab and opened applications for the inaugural cohort of innovators working to build homes more quickly, affordably, and sustainably.
The Builders Lab's first cohort will include a select group of early- to middle-stage companies from across the United States. Over nine months, the program will offer expert business, policy and technical coaching. Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with Terner Labs’ extensive network of regulators, policymakers, strategic partners, and advisors.
“It’s clearer than ever that we need to build housing more quickly, cost-effectively and sustainably, but systemic barriers continue to challenge innovators in the housing construction and delivery space,” says Ben White, Builders Lab Director. “We’re excited to offer our programming and network to ventures whose business models can successfully navigate and diminish these barriers.”
This launch builds on the success of the Housing Venture Lab, a Terner Labs program established in 2019 to support early-stage ventures advancing equity, affordability and sustainability in housing. Terner Labs Chief Executive Officer Ben Metcalf says industrialized construction is an important piece of the housing puzzle. “With the Builders Lab, we aim to uplift ventures with the potential to transform the cost and feasibility of construction in their regional markets and on a national level. ”
The program will support cohort members in rapidly scaling their businesses while stepping into amplified leadership roles within their regional markets and the broader industrialized construction sector. Ventures selected to participate in the cohort will also take part in an international study tour of industrialized construction ecosystems.
The Builders Lab is a program of Terner Labs, the sister organization of the Terner Center for Housing Innovation at the University of California, Berkeley. The Lab has received generous support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and JPMorgan Chase & Co, along with a growing group of senior-level strategic advisors and government supporters.
Interested ventures can apply from now through August 2, 2024 on the Terner Labs website: www.ternerlabs.org/builders-lab
